The Clean Street Team represents a unique approach for helping homeless men and women in Atlanta. This program offers a comprehensive transitional employment and training model that helps participants achieve sustainable self-sufficiency.
How It Works
Every weekday, a miraculous thing occurs in the city of Atlanta. Men and women in cobalt blue work shirts are transported by vans to clean sidewalks, streets, and highways all over the city. These dedicated men and women work hard, in all types of weather, to maintain our city by sweeping up leaves and litter, picking up debris, and clearing brush along interstate highways. The miracle is that every single one of these hardworking men and women has had a severe history of homelessness and many have slept on the sidewalks they now clean.
As a transitional employment and training program, the Clean Street Team offers homeless men and women the opportunity to reclaim their lives by gaining hands-on work experience. In exchange for their commitment to give up drugs and alcohol and be ready to work between 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Samaritan House provides them with a host of opportunities to get on the right track:
- Individual case management and employment counseling
- Access to transitional housing
- Hands-on work experience
- Life skills and employment training classes
- Assistance with gaining full-time employment (including help creating a résumé and conducting job searches, basic computer training, clothing for interviews, and MARTA cards to get to and from job interviews)
- Daily morning breakfast
- Use of laundry and storage facilities
- A free Community Voice Mail number to enable participants to keep in contact with employers, case managers, and family
- Support and assistance in gaining permanent housing
Why It Works
The Clean Street Team provides an important bridge between homelessness and full-time employment that many homeless men and women need. We offer them transitional employment that puts money in their pockets while providing a vital service to our city. The positive daily routine of the program also helps prepare participants to maintain full-time employment upon graduation. The end goal for the men and women in this program is to find permanent jobs and housing and return to their families and communities as productive members.
